How MTEC’s Internship Program is Fostering the Future Leaders of Manufacturing

MTEC is passionate about fostering the next generation of engineers. That’s why our internship program helps college students entering their junior year of college expand and refine their abilities through invaluable real-world industry experience. This team of interns, along with the Director of the Program, create software, PCB’s, and various enclosures for a wide variety of products. Our interns design systems ranging from electronics, mechanical components and enclosures, embedded programming, and user applications. Prototypes are built and tested along with the preparation of necessary documentation for volume manufacturing. The diverse range of projects available to our interns gives them a chance to undergo the range of processes they will experience in their future careers. Throughout this experience, the theories that were previously taught in the classroom come to life in the real world of manufacturing.

Not only do our interns gain meaningful insight into the processes and applications of engineering theories, but they also get a chance to develop their professionalism. By interacting with MTEC and our valued clients, interns will improve their competency and learn what it takes to form valuable professional relationships. Many of our interns go on to successful engineering and manufacturing careers, using the insight they’ve gained at MTEC to inform their performance at their respective organizations.

Internship experiences range everywhere from engineering and computer science to business to business marketing. MTEC’s position as a multidisciplinary consulting firm allows us to give interns of all educational backgrounds a wide array of projects to fine-tune their professional skills. Whether interns are hoping to focus on short and long-form copywriting or designing custom PCB’s, MTEC’s internship program provides a diverse range of learning opportunities. As much as our internship program benefits our interns, we believe our interns make valuable contributions to MTEC as a whole. Regarding the program, MTEC’s Director of Engineering, Bob Incerto says, ““Our program has not only given practical workplace experiences to our interns, but they introduce new, fresh ideas which have greatly benefited our clients and staff.”

One of our former interns, Kerry Ford, currently works as a Hardware Developer for IBM’s Microprocessor Test Development Lab and an Adjunct Lecturer at SUNY New Paltz. Throughout his time at MTEC, Kerry worked on a web-design project that spanned multiple years. On his time spent on this project, Kerry says, “Interfacing with the clients to make sure the design was up to their standards and working through their constant requests was an excellent experience for me.  It taught me how to present my work, as well as how to work with a client in order to achieve their vision.  While I wish that I could have stayed with MTEC through the end of that project to see it completed, I will always remember the long-hours and hard work that went into it.”

Another former Engineering Intern, Sean Cerven, worked closely with our client MPI, Inc. Through his experience with MPI, he was eventually offered a full time position with the company, and then went on to start a business of his own and even become a supplier for MTEC. When describing his time with MTEC, Sean says ”communication and getting my feet wet in a professional setting was something I was missing in my college career. Interning at MTEC immensely helped prepare myself for my professional career.” Kerry and Sean are two of the many interns who have benefited from the opportunities our internship program provides. Here are some testimonials from other previous and current interns:

The biggest lesson I have learned from MTEC is that school doesn’t really teach you to apply your skills and knowledge in practice. School was more about teaching you the theory and the fundamentals but not how to actually apply it. MTEC was where I really learned real-world hands-on technical experience.

-Tanvir Khan, Computer Engineering Intern

My supervisors really [made] an effort to make working here really enjoyable. I am always learning new things beyond my area of study…

-Maranda Dominguez, IT Intern

“I am currently still working at MTEC, but I feel my experience here helped me apply my knowledge and gain confidence in doing so.”

-Jean Guillotine, Electrical Engineering Intern

In the words of MTEC’s Executive Director, Thomas G. Phillips, “[Our interns] have continually demonstrated that they are willing, able, and professional partners as member[s] of the MTEC team, and we highly recommend the use of interns to complement your workforce.” If you would like to learn more about our internship program, or become an intern yourself, contact us today!
